The screenwriter turned down an adaptation to work on his own idea

Legendary producer Robert Evans wanted to work with screenwriter Robert Towne.
In s Los Angeles, private detective JJ Gittes (Nicholson) is hired by a woman who goes by the name of Evelyn Mulwray to prove her husband's.
Evans offered Towne $175,000 to write a screenplay for an adaptation of “The Great Gatsby.” Towne didn’t feel like he could really do the novel justice, so instead, he asked to write a film based on his own idea. Instead of $175,000, Towne got $25,000 to write “Chinatown.”
